Snow Patrol's Homecoming Gig a Resounding Success
04 September 2007
The Mayor of North Down, Councillor Stephen Farry, has
warmly congratulated all the agencies involved in organising
the very successful Snow Patrol concert on Saturday night.
He stated:
“North Down Borough Council is delighted with the
stunning success of the Snow Patrol homecoming concert on
Saturday night. It proved to be a fantastic celebration
for Bangor and has no doubt significantly enhanced the international
standing of the town.
“The concert was Snow Patrol’s homecoming gig
and they were extremely well received by the home crowd.
The feedback has been very positive. There was also strong
appreciation of the support acts, in particular those from
Northern Ireland.
“This was the largest event of its type ever to be
organised in North Down. Over 30,000 people attended the
concert, with tickets being sold out in a matter of hours
from when they went on sale. Indeed, it was the largest
crowd on the UK and Ireland leg of their global tour.
“The concert provided a major boost to the local
economy. All the hotels and guesthouses in Bangor were booked
up weeks in advance, and the same goes for the surrounding
towns. In addition to local people, the concert attracted
people from other parts of Northern Ireland, the south of
Ireland, Britain and even further afield. Even the Director
of the internationally renowned Bregenz International Festival
came to see this concert.
“A significant amount of preparation went into the
event. Council, the PSNI and the Fire and Rescue Service
met with Wonderland Promotions on a regular basis in the
months leading up to the event. In particular, great efforts
were made to inform local residents of what would be happening
and to keep disruption to a minimum.
“The implementation of the plans proceeded very smoothly
on the evening itself. I was pleased that the concert not
only kept to schedule but even finished a few minutes earlier
than promised. This is a great tribute to all of those involved.
“North Down has gained a well-deserved reputation
for organising and hosting major events. We are committed
to providing a diverse range, appealing to the widest cross-section
of the population.
“This event was in many respects an experiment. The
Council will want to have a full debrief and to see what
lessons can be learnt. But something like this could very
well be considered for Bangor again in the near future.
Indeed, Snow Patrol themselves were expressing a desire
to play in their home town again.”
