Walled Garden Proves Popular Despite Wet Weather

26 June 2008

The weekend’s wet weather did not deter supporters of the Castle Park Walled Garden from attending an open day at the site on Saturday 21 June. Around 1,000 people visited the Garden during the course of the day and were delighted with the progress made to date in restoring this important piece of Bangor’s horticultural heritage.

Mayor of North Down, Alderman Leslie Cree, MLA, spent a considerable part of the day at the site and commented: “The weather was against us for a outdoor event on Saturday but almost 1,000 people braved the elements and came to see the Garden. This is a clear indication of the enthusiasm people have for this particular project. I spoke to a number of those who visited and the feedback I received was very positive—many people could not believe so much has been achieved on site since the beginning of the year and there is considerable excitement about the Garden officially opening later in 2008.”

“I would like to thank all those who made the effort to come along on the day and hope that when we next open the Garden, we will do so when the sun is shining!”

The Mayor also expressed his thanks to Bangor and Holywood Town Centre Management for organising the speciality market that ran throughout the day and to Ulster Brass who provided excellent entertainment.

One of the visitors to the site on Saturday was local man Jim McCready, for whom the Walled Garden provokes special memories as his father worked there during the 1960s.
