Race to the Starting Blocks of the Bangor 10K
22 August 2008
North Down Borough Council and North Down Athletics Club
are encouraging runners of all abilities to get ready for
the Bangor 10K Road Race, which hits the streets of the
town on Saturday 27 September 2008. This popular race from
the 1990s was revived in 2005 and each year since then has
attracted hundred of athletes to compete along the course
from Bangor Town Hall to Ward Park via Groomsport.
Mayor of North Down, Alderman Leslie Cree, MLA, joined
David Seaton Chair, Athletics Northern Ireland, this week
to launch the race. He commented, “The Bangor 10K
has proved very popular with athletes from home and abroad
since it was revived in 2005. The course is flat and allows
for a fast and exciting race, which is appealing to both
participants and spectators. In the past racers have included
Zola Budd, Gerry Curtis and Dave Long, who have gone on
to shine at many international athletics meetings, including
the Olympic Games. We hope similar talent will be attracted
to compete this year and that the number of participants
will continue to grow—perhaps even exceeding our most
recent record of 500.”
The race starts at noon from the front of Bangor Town Hall
on Saturday 27 September and will be run on roads and footpaths
(not traffic free), however it will be marshalled and the
PSNI will facilitate the management of traffic. The prize
fund will provide for all categories of runner, including
prizes for teams of three for both men and woman. All finishers
will receive a commemorative tee shirt.
Race information is available from Bangor Castle Leisure
Centre. Participants can register online by clicking here
or on the day from 10.00am at Bangor Castle Leisure Centre
where changing facilities will be available. Fees are £8
for Affiliated Club Runners and £9 for Non-Affiliated.
