Doggy Talks Prove Popular in Local Schools
22 February 2010
As part of our work to promote responsible dog ownership, North Down Borough Council is talking to the dog owners of the future, whether they are in nursery, primary or secondary school. The interactive talks teach children about the care and attention they must exercise if they become dog owners. Personal safety around dogs is also discussed.
Over the past few months the Council has partnered with Guide Dogs for the Blind (Peninsula Branch) in the delivery of these talks. Thanks to local resident, Brian Reid, children have had the opportunity to meet a trained guide dog and hear how she helps Brian to move around independently.
Karen Kenny, from North Down Borough Council commented: “Most children love animals and are excited to learn more about them. Having a working guide dog and his owner along with us on our talks provides a different perspective and is a real hit with children we talk to."
The most recent talk was to Connor House Playgroup, who presented a collection to the local Guide Dogs for the Blind representative, Orlene McMilen.
